T-H-Y http://andermikalson.com/T-H-Y http://andermikalson.com/following/andermikalson.com/T-H-Y Sat, 18 Jun 2011 12:11:48 +0000 Ander Mikalson 1610009 2011, Live performance, 1 hour In collaboration with Oscar Santillan Performed by Christine Stoddard and Billy Flynn From February 9 to March 23, 2011, artists Oscar Santillan and Ander Mikalson conspired to introduce fiction into each other’s everyday lives. They each gave the other the contact information of five close friends and family members who agreed to act as mediators. In this way each artist gained access to the private life of the other as they used the mediators to execute scripted actions, called events. The work was an attempt to insert romanticism into daily life and to fictionalize chance in the world. The experience of T.H.Y is documented in performances. Two actors, one male and one female, are hired to tell the story. They come to class in place of the artists, presenting the experience with a diagram and monologues. They appear at the artists' openings, mixing with the gallery goers, striking up conversations and spreading the story. The audience does not know they are experiencing an art work, just as Santillan and Mikalson did not know if their daily interactions with others were incidental or carefully planned. The conversations the actors have with the viewers blend seamlessly into the other social interactions happening all around them. The actors’ performance is documented in photographs. In the end, all that exists of the art action is a documentation of a documentation. The paper arrived at the gallery entirely black. At the start of the exhibition it bore only a few fingerprints, a result of adhering the piece to the wall. Five weeks later the work appeared as pictured, a record of its own existence over time. Soot had travelled throughout the gallery and down the stairs; while outside forces imposed upon the drawing, it, in turn, infiltrated the space beyond its borders.
